EVENTS TAKING PLACE 2006
- Apart from regular lessons,
Harmonia Music School in
Escaldes-Engordany, Andorra, also organises summer schools, and an
International Accordion Competition, "Gran Premi d' Escaldes-Engordany",
the 3rd edition of which will be held September 23 - 26, 2005.
- The
Finnish Accordion
Institute publishes CDs, LPs, sheet music, books, etc. It also has an
accordion museum, and September 18 - 22, 2001 it organised the first
International Lasse Pihlajamaa Competition.
- In 2003 the categories for the
International Wolfgang Jacobi
Competition for chamber music of the 20th century are flute/piano and
flute/accordion. It will be held 14-16 November at the Hochschule für
Musik und Theater in Munich, Germany. The competition is open for young
chamber music ensembles from Europe (age limit: 30 years); the jury
includes Hugo Noth. (Currently, the website still refers to the 2002
program).

International Accordion
Competition Klingenthal (

in Klingenthal, Germany, May 7 - 14, 2004, for soloists, duos and
ensembles.
- The 3rd National and 2nd
Internatioal
Premio Citta' di Atri will be held in Atri, Italy, on April 30 and May
1, 2004. The competition is open to accordion players, pianists and
keyboard players.
- The
City of Castelfidardo
(
) in Italy
organises a yearly
Premio e
Concorso Internazionale di Fisarmonica "Citta' di Castelfidardo". The
next one will be held October 8-12, 2003.
- The 2005 edition of the
International Composition
Competition F. Evangelisti in Rome is a competition for compositions
for the Bayan Accordion in chamber music, either solo or in ensemble. The
deadline for entry is 15 September 2005; the six finalist scores will be
performed by Germano Scurti and by the Alter Ego ensemble on December 10,
2005 during Nuova Consonanza Festival.

Fisa...armonie is an
international competition held in Trieste, Italy for accordion soloists,
concert players and chamber ensembles. The third edition will be held
September 23 - 25, 2005.
- The 9th edition of the
International Astor
Piazzolla Award will be held in Udine, Italy, on October 30th -
November 1st, 2002. The competition is open to groups and solists playing
music by Astor PIazzolla; the application deadline is October 15th, 2002.
- The
International Music
Competitions of Val Tidone, Italy, June 7 - 13, 2004 include the
"Carlo Civardi" Classical and Varieté Accordion Prize, as well as chamber
music and composition competitions in which accordionists can enter. There
is also a National Competition on June 5-6, an International Masterclass
Project July 28 - August 7, 2004 and A festival running from May to
September
- The
New Zealand Accordion Association
organises the South Pacific Accordion Championships and the New Zealand
Accordion Championships and Festival in Auckland, New Zealand, on June 3 -
5, 2005. They also organise concerts, workshops, socials, etc., and they
bring out a newsletter every 2 to 3 months.

Hauspoz, the Basque Accordion Association, aims to promote the
accordion music, and artists and future artists. They organize "Arrasate
Hiria 2001", the 9th International Accordion Competition, 22nd National
Competition and 14th Accordion Festival in Arrasate-Mondragón on December
3-8, 2001. Also, they organise an accordion week in July, 2002.
- The first
Festival de
Acordeón "Ciudad de Salamanca" (

was held on November 2--4, 2001, with competitions both for solo
accordions and (mixed) ensembles. The
2nd Festival de
Acordeón "Ciudad de Salamanca" ( )
will be held November 1--3, 2002.
- The
Accordion Federation of North America
was founded in 1955 to stimulate the general public's interest in the
accordion and to improve teaching. It organises a yearly festival in Los
Angeles, California. Their 50th Gala Celebration will be held August 12 -
14, 2005. It will include accordion, piano, vocal and dance competitions,
concerts and a Frank Marocco seminar.
- The
Accordion Teachers Association of
Massachusetts sponsors annual New England Music Competition and
Festival. The next one is April 2-4, 2004, in Newton, Massachusetts.

Spasiuk tours Europe in November 2005, with concerts in Norway, Spain,
the UK, Portugal, Belgium and the Netherlands
- In the
Bimhuis in Amsterdam there are 2
accordion concerts on November 13, 2006: Richard Galliano in the
afternoon, and Kimmo Pohjonen and Eric Echampard in the evening.
- The
Leeuwarder Accordeon

publishes a quarterly magazine, Accordion Review. It organises its 34th
International Festival and 35st annual congress in Melbourne, Victoria on
July 4 - 10, 2005.
- The
Internationales
Akkordeonfestival Wien (

in Vienna, February 25 - March 26, 2006 features many concerts in many
locations (many of which are double concerts), as well as workshops (every
Wednesday afternoon). Artists include Otto Lechner, Frank Marocco,
Riccardo Tesi and many others
- The
Airbag Festival (

was held in Brugge, Belgium from May 15 to July 25, 2004. It included
concerts by amongst others Guy Klucevsek, Raul Barbosa and Attwenger,
balls, and two exhibitions: "About squeezeboxes and spoon basses" with the
collection of Charles Maeyaert (170 items), and "Variétés" about the
influence of the accordion on the art and culture of Flanders.

Prague Accordion and Harmonica Days
The competition is open to amateur harmonica and accordion ensembles and
orchestras. It is held biannually, alternating with the European Festival
of Accordion Orchestras, also in Prague.

Sata-Häme accordion festival (

in the Finnish town Ikaalinen, June 27 - July 2, 2006 Some sixty concerts
and events during one week, international accordion soloists and groups
from Scandinavia, Germany, France, Russia, etc. A

Toholampi Accordion Week in
Toholampi, Finland, was last on July 3 - 9, 2005; it will not be held in

Carsfeld (

in Germany is where the Bandoneon was invented -- on the site of its
Tourist Information Bureau, there are a few pages a description and
diagrams of the instrument, its history and a few sound clips. Also, there
is a yearly Bandoneon Meeting in Carsfeld, which will next be held October
7 - 9, 2005.
- The
River Zydeco Band from Brabant,
the Netherlands, with Jo van Strien on Accordion, play only one kind of
music: Zydeco! They are also responsible for the yearly
Zydeco Zity in Raamsdonkveer, the
Netherlands, a.k.a. Zydeco Zity. It will next be held June 16 - 18, 2006

Accordion Celebration is held each June in Leavenworth, Washington.

Blair, the Joe Smiell Family Band, Bernadette Conlon Tony Lovello and
Johnny V. Nightly concerts and dancing, daytime jam sessions and
competitions plus workshops.
- The
Czech Area Concertina Club
claims to be the world's largest Chemnitzer concertina club. They meet
every 2nd Tuesday of the month. September 16 - 18 they organise
Legends of the Concertina,
2005 in Twin Cities and New Prague.
- The
Festival International de
Louisiane has plenty Cajun and Zydeco music, of course. It will next
be held April 26 - 30, 2006.
- The
National Accordion
Awareness Month -- June -- was established in 1989 by Tom Torriglia,
and he seems to be fairly good at generating publicity for the instrument
with it.
- The
New Orleans Jazz and Heritage
Festival, with plenty Cajun and Zydeco music of course, will next be
held April 28 - May 7, 2006.
- The
Northeast Squeeze-In Festival,
in Washington, Massachusetts (?), September 1 - 3, 2006 (Labour Day
Weekend), sponsored by The Button Box.
- The
NorthWest
SqueezeFest
- The
Original Southwest Louisiana Zydeco Music Festival in Plaisance,
Louisiana, will be held on Saturda, September 1, 2001 (with pre-parties on
August 31st)
- The
Rocky Mountain Accordion Celebration
is an annual festival in Philipsburg, Montana, last held July 30 - August
1, 2004 It features a weekend of dancing and listening to music, steak
barbeques and outdoor pancake breakfasts, concerts, and a parade of
homemade pies.
- The 19th (?) annual
Santa Barbara French Festival,
will be held in Santa Barbara, California on July 15 - 16, 2006, with two
days of non-stop entertainment on 3 stages -- including one stage devoted
only to accordion music. The next one will be July 14 - 15, 2007.
- The
National Accordion Association
(formerly the Texas Accordion Association) aims to promote performance of
all types of music on the accordion and promote the accordion as a serious
musical instrument. They do this amongst others by organising a yearly

Folkworks
organises a yearly summerschool in Durham, one for youth and one for
adults, with workshops for amongst others English concertina, piano
accordion and diatonic accordion. The next one is August 7 - 12, 2006. For
the adult summer school, squeezebox tutors will be Alistair Anderson for
English concertina, Ian Lowthian and Shona Kipling for piano accordion,
and Katie Howson for melodeon (D/G); Karen Tweed and Kerry Fletcher will
rund a "Band with Dance" group. They also organise a 'workout weekend' in
Darlington in October. Apparently the Sage / Folkworks website is somewhat
difficult to navigate around, so some of the Folkworks regulars have
started the Our Folkworks
website, with a list of events at Folkworks and elsewhere, sessions, etc.

Hands on Music organises
instrumental workshop weekends in Witney, England, under the direction of
Dave Townsend. The workshops include including Concertinas at Witney (last
held September 25 - 26, 2004), Melodeons at Witney (November 14 - 15,
2004), and Accordions at Witney (February 19 - 20, 2005). The tutors
usually are excellent, both as teachers and as musicians!
- The 16th
Harwich Accordionists

Tweed, organises a workshop weekend in Llandinam, Wales, on June 9 - 11,

Scottish Summer
Schools at the Unversity of Stirling include an Accordion Summer
Schools, July 2 - 7, 2006: Accordion playing (Scottish style), tutor Ian
Muir. Also there are sprint and autumn accordion weekends.
- Texas Folklife Resources organises
the Accordion Kings Camp and
Jamboree on August 26 -- 27, 2000 in Round Rock, Texas, with
workshops, organised jams and dance on Saturday evening. Teachers include
Geno Delafose (Zydeco), Eva Ybarra (Conjunto), Gary Bertrand (Cajun) and
John Dujka (Czech Polka).
- At the
Augusta Heritage Center of
the Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, West Virginia, in 2006 there are
accordion courses at the Cajun and Creole week, July 9 - 14, "3 levels +
Creole", as well as an accordion repair workshop led by Larry Miller; and
there is a button accordion workshop at the Irish week, July 23 - 28. See

Gaelic Roots,
Boston College, MA, June 20-26, 1999, had Jackie Daly teaching accordion
in '97, and Anne Conroy Burke and Joe Burke for accordion and Noel Hill
for concertina in '98.

Noel Hill is an Irish concertina player, originally from County Clare.
He organises the "Noel Hill Irish Concertina School" in various locations
in the USA. In 2003 they were held in East Durham, New York (August 3 -
8), in Newberg, Oregon (August 10 - 15) and Cincinnati, Ohio (July 27 -
August 1).
